(Escondido ,CA, USA 1965) Recibió una licenciatura en pintura y escultura (1988) de San Diego State University, y una maestría (1990) en escultura de Rhode Island School of Design. Al principio de los años noventa estableció su práctica artística en Nueva York. Uno de sus proyectos más visibles en esta ciudad fue "A-ZEast", una casa pequeña de Brooklyn que convirtió en showroom y laboratorio de pruebas de sus prototipos para vivir. En 2008 regresó a la costa oeste de EEUU, estableciéndose eventualmente en la región High Desert cerca del Joshua Tree National Park, donde inauguró A-Z West. Andrea también ha organizado la smockshop (tienda-blusón), "una iniciativa manejada por artistas que genera fondos para artistas cuya obra no es sustentable todavía o no es comercial" vendiendo blusones y High Desert Sites, "una seriede sitios para arte experimental" que "proporcionan espacios alternativos para obras experimentales de artistas emergentes y establecidos". Andrea Zittel es representada por Andrea Rosen Gallery en Nueva York, Regen Projects en Los Angeles, Sadie Coles HQ en Londres, Massimo De Carlo en Milán y Spruth-Magers en Munich.


Su trabajo ha sido incluido en exposiciones colectivas como la Bienal de Venecia, Documenta X, Skultureproject en Munster y en las ediciones de 1995 y de 2004 de la Bienal de Whitney. (Escondido ,CA, USA 1965) Received a BFA in painting and sculpture (1988) from San Diego State University, and an MFA (1990) in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design.  In the early 1990s she first established her practice in New York.  One of her most visible projects in NY was "A-Z East", a small row house in Brooklyn which she turned into a showroom testing grounds for her prototypes for living.  In 2008 she moved back to the West Coast, eventually settling in the High Desert region next to Joshua Tree National Park where she has now founded A-Z West.   Andrea has also organized the smockshop, "an artist run enterprise that generates income for artists whose work is either non-commercial, or not yet self-sustaining" by selling smocks, and High Desert Test Sites, "a series of experimental art sites" which "provide alternative space for experimental works by both emerging and established artists."  Andrea Zittel is represented by Andrea Rosen Gallery in NYC, Regen Projects in Los Angeles, Sadie Coles HQ in London, Massimo DeCarlo in Milan and Spruth-Magers in Munich.


 

Her work has also been included in group exhibitions  such as the Venice Bienalle, Documenta X, Skulture project in Munster,  and both the 1995 and the 2004 Whitney Biennials.    She has had solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Carnegie Museum in Pitsburgh, The Diechtorhallen in Hamburg, The Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria in NY, The Museum for Gegenwartskunst in Basel and the The Louisiana Museum in Denmark.  Her traveling survey show "Critical Space" recently traveled to The New Museum in NYC, The Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston TX, the Albright Knox museum in Buffalo, NY, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.  Andrea Zittel’s work was recently highlighted in the exhibition 1:1 at the Schaulager in Basel Switzerland.
